The dog woke me
to go out a bit after 2 am.
My wife, a light sleeper,
usually handles this,
but my turn was long
overdue.
Walking into the back yard,
I was surprised to see
the moon’s bald head
hang low in the sky,
and the yard awash in
cream colored light.
The garden glowed
as if the city installed
a streetlamp facing
my property.
The hydrangeas looking
as perky as if it were noon.
Returning to bed,
far less annoyed thanks
to the moon’s magic,
I wondered if I would like
to wake more often
to let the dog out
and see all this again.
I decided I’d rather
sleep undisturbed
and let my wife enjoy
the spectacle.
She can tell me about it
in the morning.
