The Knife

Our parents still have the knife I used to cut my brothers arm?
He was bigger than me, but I was meaner in my anger.
We would tear at one another, childish insults that make you laugh,
‘Your hair’s too curly.  You’re too fat. ‘
‘You’re not as big as you think. Well, you are as small as you think.’

“Sibling rivalry, Oedipus this or Oedipus that.”
First year psych students would confidently say.
“Look how they fight for their mothers love.”
But the truth is.

Now we have both turned sixty and he almost made me cry
When he told our mother, he hoped to be the first to die.
