But Carson we came to fish and we have only been here for 10 minutes!

 

I know Grandpa, but those kids are having so much fun with their boats. 

Can I go play with them?  Please?

 

Well let's put all our fishing gear back into the truck and wash our hands.

Are your hands washed?

Good let's go ask if we can join them.  Do you know any of them?

Carson just a minute!  What's the rules?

 

Oh Grandpa, why do we always have to have rules?

 

Because you are with me and I promised your parents you would be safe and I wouldn't let you get hurt.  I have to take you home just like I picked you up, all in one piece!

Yes sir,  Stay with you until you say GO,  keep out of the water.

Hi, I am David, Carson's Grandpa, but he calls me Bobby.  I think it's because all of the kids TV shows, call the old men, you know, they name all the father types, Bobby.

 

Hi Bobby, I'm Tim, my kid is Timmy.  He is the one in the blue shirt with the navy cap.

 

Hi Bobby, I'm Jeff, my kid is Susan, she's the tall girl with the pig tails.

Welcome to the “Lake Fathers”, Do you need a coffee?  I brought a large thermos with plenty to share.       

 

Grandpa! Grandpa! Look, look, Timmy had two boats and he said I could play with one. His dad helped him make it. It's the first one they ever made together.  Isn't it neat?  Can we make one?  Bye, I have to go, we have a race to run!  Can I get near the water?

Carson, Carson!  It's time to go, Grandma will be home soon and we need to get you cleaned up with some dry clothes.  I am sure she will want to know how may fish you caught today.

 

Bobby, I want to stay here!  My boat is the fastest one and nobody can beat me!  Please! Can we have one more race, please! Please!

Okay Carson, Thank, Timmy for sharing his boat with you. 

Why don't you bring his boat over here so we can take a picture of it so Grandma can see what you played with instead of fishing?

 

Grandma! Grandma!  Look what we did today!

We went fishing and I made some new friends.

They were racing their boats and Timmy let me play with his old boat.

He had two, but his old boat was the best one because I won every race!

Bobby and I are going to make our own boats so next week I'll have my own. 

I am going to paint mine red so it will go fast!

Will you please come with us? Will you watch me win all the races? We are going to make the fastest boats ever!  Will you help us make them?

 

Carson, before we make the boats we need to decide what kind of boats we'll make.

 

Grandpa, I want to have one with two sails so it will get more wind than Timmy's

 

Okay, lets make a list of all the parts we need to get.  What is the first thing we need to start with? Do you want a boat like Timmy's?

 

Naw, that was fun but it was just an old soap bottle with some sticks. 

I want a real boat.  Can we make it with wood?  Can I paint it?

Bobby can I paint it fire engine red to make it go faster!? With a white stripe?

 

Sure, red it is. What else will we need?

 

Oh,Grandpa, We will need: the boat, the sails, the thing that holds the sails,

the rudder to steer with, and the thing on the bottom to keep the boat from

tipping over when the winds blows.

 

Carson, what else do we need?  How are you going to hold the sails on?

How are you going to hold the parts together? Are you going to use rubber bands like on Timmy's first boat?  What color do you want to make the sails?

 

Carson, are you forgetting anything?

 

Bobby, we need paint, paint brushes, glue, and string to keep the sails from falling off.

 

Okay, go get the string, and glue and the paint and the paint brushes.  I'll get some wood, a saw, and something to make the sails.  We might need a drill and

something to make the keel weight.

 

Grandma! Grandma do you want to help Grandpa  and me make some boats?

Well, Carson I am sure that you will need something to measure with, a pencil to mark with and a band aid for when you cut yourself.

 

Oh Grandma, you're so funny!

 

Carson, Carson, Mr. Carson,  are you ready for the boat races?  Get your stuff and get in the truck so we can go and be there first.  We don't want to be the last ones  to arrive.  We don't want to be late!

 

Timmy, look what I made!  It is the best boat ever!

 

Carson,  That's not fair your boat has two sails!

It's Okay Timmy,  I put a rock on the bottom to make it go slower.

Hi Jeff, It's good to see you and Susan again.  Jeff, this is my wife Keri, she helped Carson make the boats, but like always she has to do a little extra so she made a batch of cookies for prizes.  I hope no one is allergic to Peanut Butter.  Jeff since you seem to be the master race officiant I drew up a simple plan for building some other race boats.  I thought if we handed out a set of plans, we could establish a standard class type of race where the kids could all race on an equal basis.  What do you think?

 

Do the instructions have the cookie recipe with them?  These are killer!
