The Big-Little Game
Hunter
It
is a cloudy day it looks like it could rain but it does not, an average
pacific northwest day. Our team, the Athletics, are down 2-4 to the
White Sox. The stands are packed with friends and family. The people in
the stands have blankets and are bundled up in jackets. This is the
final game of the tournament of champions. If we lose this game, we are
out of the running for a game against the little league nationals
champions to declare the champions of the season. It is an intense game
everybody is on the edge of their seat watching as, the White Sox
gained 1 on us in the 3rd inning and we scored 2 runs in that same
inning making the score 4-5.
You can hear cheering and excitement from my team as we try and get
ahead of the other team. Everybody has high hopes for this game. Our
best player Cal goes up to bat. Cal has not been doing as good this
game, but we still have high hopes because he is the best hitter in the
league having hit 2 home runs and usually hits the ball into deep
outfield Cal is also always on top of the pitch ready to swing! We
watch as Cal lets one pitch go by and then the catcher throws it back
to the pitcher. It was a ball, then the pitcher throws the next pitch
it’s a swing and a miss. And the third pitch he sees a ball and does
not swing the count is 2 balls 1 strike this pitcher is their best
pitcher so Cal is having a hard time getting contact the fourth pitch
he hits the ball with the edge of his bat and you can hear the ball as
it flies up and goes foul he was lucky it was not caught. The fifth
pitch comes into the zone and he strikes out! Our star player just
struck out. Patrick, our best fielder, is up to bat and the first pitch
flies fast right on course to the strike zone. Patrick starts his swing
as time feels like it slows down you could hear a pin drop. The bat
gets swung around him and whipped into the ball and BOOM! a line-drive
right to shortstop the shortstop dives and catches it! We are all
shocked, as you can hear the crowd erupt cheering, we have 3 outs the
white socks are up to bat score still 4-5.
Then we got 3 quick outs after what felt like a few seconds. I looked
back at the score board and the score was already 5-5. I had not been
paying much attention and, 2 outs! then Finley was up to bat the first
pitch flies to Finley and it was a strike, second pitch was thrown way
of course and it was a ball then he fouled off a pitch and then it was
1 ball 2 strikes one strike away from another out and the pitch… and
BOOM! a missile you can hear the excitement as the ball flew past the
center fielder and you can tell the center fielder didn’t expect that,
he ran back and the ball was against the wall, then the centerfielder
got the ball and threw it back and it was a double! The next batter
comes up and then first pitch… strike second pitch was a ball, the
third pitch and then SLAM the ball got smacked into the ground the
pitcher ran for it and got the ball then I looked over and saw the ball
flying through the air and then… he was out at first!
Three outs after that we went out into the field, I am at
left field our pitcher was done warming up after a bit then their first
batter is up, first pitch strike, second pitch and… a hit! I thought
this is bad if they got one more run, they win. Luckily our short-stop
got them out at first, I sighed a phew of relief and then the next
batter then 2 quick strikes and then SLAM he hit it straight to right
field a double I thought this is bad for us and then after 2 walks we
knew it was going to be hard then a bit later bases loaded one of their
best hitters goes up to bat and first pitch, strike second pitch and
the ball sours in the air it feels like time slows down when BOOM! I
saw the ball fly straight to me and I felt the wind in my face as I
dart over to the ball it hit the ground right on the line, and I threw
it back to the infield but it was too late he made it home. We all
looked at the umpire for the call, fair or foul he yelled… fair! That
was the game.
My team walked back to the dugout disappointed of course but
my coach reminded us that we did all we could just it didn’t go our
way. We all lined up for our medals and the umpire announced the other
teams players names and gave them medals and then ours we got silver
medals and they got gold ones we weren’t so much sad anymore as we just
wanted the medals. I saw all of my friends get their medals then mine
the umpire announced my name and my most played position, left field,
and I got medal and then after the other teams coach got the trophy and
then we lined up as a team in a line and said good game to the other
and then walked back to the dugout got our stuff and one of the parents
of one of my teammates gave all of us gift bags to cheer us up. I met
up with my family and drove home this taught me that not everything
goes my way in life, the end.
