James Thomas Hazard
The mockingbird
started to sing
When she heard the
song of sirens
Thinking the noon-day
sun
Was out for an early
visit
Shelly sat still for
a portrait
That was finished in
charcoal
The walls of
playgrounds displayed
Pictures of children
at play.
Ants swarmed down
from the hills
And down into the
valley,
Digging with care
So as not to disturb
The precious finds
And lovely remains
“You see,” the leader
said. “This is what I mean.
Glass made so
precisely
And steel so shaped
You can almost feel
The hands of the
artists at work
“My God they were
great
How I wish I had
known them
“Before the earth
took into its orbit
The rays of other
suns.”
