Time Travel

For the last several days or so, as I drive up 8th Street and turn left on Newport, I find myself looking over my shoulder, as if as somehow expecting a car to run through the stop and crash into the back of my car. Then again the next day, as I turn into Newport going toward my house a couple blocks away, I feel vulnerable driving as I’m heading west toward 6th Street.

It’s an odd sensation that somehow feels real to me, I’m not sure why.

About a week later, Jacob and I are going shopping. I turn north into 5 Cities Drive, slow down and turn left into the plaza toward California Fresh Market. As I’m turning, with cars approaching and going south a block or so away, I see a truck barreling toward me at an excessive rate of speed. Then, trying to slow down by slamming down on the brakes, it leaves a 65 foot skid mark. The oncoming vehicle rams into the back side of my car.

The driver of the truck keeps going after the collision and we turn into the parking area, pull over and stop.  Jacob calls the Pismo police. After a short wait an officer comes and documents the incident.

Later on, I somehow remember another time when a similar incident occurred. I was much younger and just out of my first year of College. I had written a short story about a car accident, in which I was a passenger. The next day the accident occurred almost exactly as I had written the sequence of events.

We hear the use of the word premonition in various contexts. The word means an early warning about a future event. Who is to say if the event is good or bad, intentional or chance. Say what you will. However, it is entirely plausible that when such an event takes place, it’s a form of time travel. What other way would one explain the phenomena described?

I believe that Albert Einstein formulated the theory that Time is Relative. Whatever that means, I’m not sure. To this day, I feel that the concept of time travel makes occurrences of this sort explainable, yet perhaps in a way that we just can’t formulate in words.

We live in a three dimensional world, or so it seems. If indeed, time is the fourth dimension, then what sort of existential pathways have opened to our cogitative abilities?
