Philip
Eldridge Spooner
was an Aviation Machinist's Mate, USN, assigned to the USS Chicago
docked in Hawaii. He was also an amateur photographer. Philip
took photographs of the plane and
field following the crash. This is the first time these have been
published.
Amelia Earhart's first attempt of a World Flight went from Oakland,
California March 17, 1937 to Hawaii
where they had to land to have the Lockeed Electra
10E serviced. Three days later they crashed on takeoff from Luke Field,
Ford Island. The aircraft was sent by ship back to Lockeed Burbank for
repair. The historic second attempt of the World Flight was publically
announced from Miami, Florida June 1, 1937, after a flight from
Oakland.
