The sides of this basket are woven from more expensive cane rather than the customary rattan. With a solid wood bottom and carved wooden handle, this is an extremely sturdy basket. Lengths of braided seagrass are woven around the sides in a criss-cross pattern on a background of deep rust. It is finished with a light oak tung oil stain. This wicker basket is made almost completely with round, rather than flat reed. A wicker basket is one that uses round rather than flat stakes. The round stakes are then woven into a sturdy rim. On this basket, the stakes are dark brown, as is the woven rim. The lattice design is formed by using three weavers at once -- two round reeds atop deep terra cotta reed. This very large floor basket's unique design is formed by means of a twill weave -- meaning that there are two layers of reed covering the basket.
